Ship Berthing Information Extraction System Using Three-Dimensional Light Detection and Ranging Data

Safe and efficient berthing is essential to ensure maritime transportation the safety of ships ports. Three-dimensional (3D) light detection ranging (LiDAR) can monitor support ship because it provides abundant target information offers excellent advantages in measuring accuracy. Hence, a extraction system has been developed based on 3D LiDAR. Principal component analysis used calculate ship’s heading normal vector, feature points bow stern are determined. The segments passing through obtained via region growing. recognized by similarity vector according positions relative berth visibility analysis. Qualitative quantitative calculated analyses distance, velocity, approach angle dynamic dock performed LiDAR data. A laser scanner, as unit, efficiently monitored Ro–Ro Ocean Island at Lushun Port field experiments. On-site applications demonstrated feasibility effectiveness proposed method for recognition ensuring safe berthing.
